KU Campus

Lawrence

KU’s main campus is in Lawrence, Kansas, one of the few cities in the United States founded for political reasons. Lawrence was settled in 1854 for the sole purpose of making Kansas a slavery-free state. The city began as a small outpost on the banks of the Kansas River, and it still retains many interesting reminders of its colorful past. The tree-lined main street just a few blocks from campus offers an abundance of small specialty shops, many of which cater to the diverse needs of KU students, faculty, and staff. Lawrence’s 32 public parks, three community swimming pools, arts center, historical museum, and Seem-to-Be Players children’s theatre group are just a few of the opportunities in the community.

Hillary Pedersen

“Being an intern at Spencer Museum of Art has given me practical job experience, helped me to refine my career goals, and allowed me to confront important museum issues that will help me make more informed curatorial decisions. The internship combined with my academic work has made my graduate experience at KU an educational and rewarding part of my career preparation, beyond what I expected. ”

– Hillary Pedersen, history of art
