Graduate Student Life

To find out more about the life of a KU graduate student, contact the Graduate and Professional Association at (785) 864-4914, www.ku.edu/~gpa. Graduate students also can take advantage of on-campus family housing (www.housing.ku.edu) and child care (www.hilltop.ku.edu). The Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success publishes a Referral Guide each year. It provides information about KU policies and procedures.

Much of this information is online at www.studenthandbook.ku.edu, www.provost.ku.edu, and www.registrar.ku.edu.

Health Insurance

A graduate student with a teaching or research assistantship may be eligible for a health care benefits program, depending on the GTA/GRA level and length of appointment. Other student health insurance plans are available, regardless of employment. For more information, go to www.hreo.ku.edu.

Safety and Crime at KU

The annual security report about KU safety policies, crime statistics, and campus resources is available online at www.ku.edu/safety or on paper from the Dean of Students, Strong Hall, 1450 Jayhawk Blvd., Room 113, Lawrence, KS 66045-7535, (785) 864-4060.

Professional Development

Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) improves KU doctoral students’ readiness to assume tenure-track faculty roles in diverse academic institutions and enhances placement of KU graduates by fostering a better fit between graduate students’ goals and eventual academic employment.

Preparing Future Professionals (PFP) offers workshops and training sessions that explore ways in which individuals with graduate degrees can seek opportunities in the business, nonprofit, and government sectors.

For more information on these programs, see www.graduate.ku.edu.

Jamel Sandidge

“I work for the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis, conducting high pressure experiments in a stainless steel reactor and analyzing the materials I create using a suite of analytical tools available on campus. The CEBC has given me exceptional experiences working on cutting-edge technology and the opportunity to interact in multidisciplinary teams, which is key in today’s industrial workplace.”

– Chad Johnson, chemical and petroleum engineering
