Finding an Existing Photo of KU

UR Photo Archive
The Photo Library is a collection of KU photographs produced and copyrighted by University Relations. We have digital files, prints, slides, slide dupes, and negatives available for approved types of re-use. A growing number of our photographs are available online in the Photo Web Library. Photos should be credited to University Relations and are not to be altered. High-resolution versions of the photos in the Photo Web Library are available upon request.

Order Copies
You can request a copy of a photo you have seen in the Photo Web Library or in a university publication. A limited selection of slide dupes of general interest is immediately available to buy or borrow. The majority of our images, however, are stored as negatives or raw digital files and must be processed before we can distribute them.

You can search our online Photo Web Library for free. More advanced file searches must be conducted by University Relations staff and are free for the first 1/2-hour and $50 per hour after that. Please contact us at kuphotos@ku.edu to schedule a file search appointment.

In-house processing is prioritized on a job-by-job basis. Some jobs may be contracted out to subcontractors. Turnaround times vary.

We will assess the staffing and equipment requirements for the project and provide a cost estimate. We recommend scheduling weekday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shooting at least one week in advance, and off-hours shooting at least two week in advance. If we are is unable to meet your requirements, we will provide a short list of Lawrence-area freelance photographers whom you may contact.

Staff and Faculty Portraits

Professional portraits of faculty and staff are available through the University Relations Photography Department. These head-and-shoulder-type portraits are used for university-wide communications, media relations and publicity.

In August, the Offices of the Provost and University Relations sponsor free portraits for new faculty, distinguished and named professors, and key administrators. All other monthly portrait sessions are scheduled by appointment only and generally cost a small fee. Please call Joanie Grosdidier at (785) 864-3256 for more information.

We recommend business attire, with somewhat understated colors, textures, and patterns; please avoid wearing clothing with stark white or very dark tonal values.

The portrait studio is located in the Office of University Relations, Wesley Building, 1314 Jayhawk Blvd., KU Lawrence campus.

Pricing

Costs vary project by project and are affected by funding source (public vs. private money), usage, shipping, tax status, and possible fees for file searches and large duplication orders. A cost estimate cannot be prepared without making these distinctions. For more information, contact us at kuphotos@ku.edu.
