Naval ROTC members receive awards

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas ROTC students received awards at the April 24 Naval ROTC spring 2002 awards ceremony at Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union. Thirty-five awards were presented.

Two seniors received top awards. Midshipman 1st Class Jennifer Booth, Lebo senior majoring in cellular biology, received the Navy League of the United States Greater Kansas City Council RADM Harold B. Miller Memorial Award for overall outstanding performance as a Naval ROTC student. She received a Navy officer's sword in recognition of the award. Midshipman 1st Class Brandon Puttroff, Newton senior in civil engineering, received the Semper Fidelis Award for professional achievement and contribution to Semper Fi and the Naval ROTC.

Booth, the battalion commanding officer; Capt. James Cooper, commanding officer of the KU Naval ROTC; and Col. Robert Tindall, U.S. Marine Corps retired, from the Reserve Officers Association were featured speakers at the ceremony. Naval ROTC students were recognized, and a reception followed in the union's Jayhawk Room.

 • American Legion Award for Military Achievement. Given to three students in the top 25 percent of their Naval ROTC class for outstanding leadership, discipline, character and citizenship.

 • American Veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam (AMVETS) Award. Given to a midshipman who possesses individual leadership characteristics and is in good academic standing. The recipient's personal appearance, initiative, dependability, judgment and self-confidence also are considered.

 • Armed Forces Communication and Electronic Association. Given to two Naval ROTC students who excel academically in engineering.

 • Daughters of the Founders and Patriots Award. For sincere interest in military or American history.

 • Daughters of the American Revolution Award. For outstanding loyalty and patriotism.

 • General Society of the War of 1812 Award. Given to a Naval ROTC student who has encouraged and demonstrated the ideals of Americanism by deed or conduct.

 • Lt. Christopher Taylor Memorial Award. For interest in aviation, professional achievement and contributions to the unit.

 • Legion of Valor. For scholastic excellence in military and academic subjects.

 • Marine Corps Association Award. Given to a Naval ROTC student who is the best Marine option for commissioning.

 • Military Order of the Loyal Legion Award. For loyalty and devotion to duty. The recipient receives a watch.

 • Military Order of the Purple Heart. Given to student who has exhibited outstanding leadership ability.

 • Military Order of the World Wars Award. Given to three Naval ROTC students for overall scholastic achievement and military aptitude.

 • National Defense Industrial Association. For participation in athletics or campus activities and outstanding leadership qualities.

 • National Sojourners Award for Americanism. Given to a Naval ROTC student who shows outstanding leadership traits and ideals of Americanism and is in the top 25 percent the class.

 • U.S. Naval Institute NROTC Award. Given to the best Naval ROTC candidate for commissioning. The recipient receives a book and subscription to Proceedings, the U.S. Naval Institute magazine.

 • Capt. Joe E. and Mrs. Brandt Award. Given to a Naval ROTC student who demonstrates tremendous aptitude for Naval service. The recipient is offered membership into the Navy League.

 • Navy League of the United States Greater K.C. Council Rear Adm. Harold B. Miller Memorial Award. For overall outstanding performance. The recipient receives a naval officer's sword.

 • The Retired Officers Association Award. For leadership potential, good academic standing, high moral character and loyalty to the unit, school and country.

 • Reserve Officer Association. Given to three Naval ROTC students who have a positive attitude, outstanding military appearance and high grades in naval science classes.

 • SECNAV Distinguished Naval Graduate Award. Honors a top graduating midshipman from each Naval ROTC unit for high standards of leadership, academic and military performance. The recipient receives a plaque signed by the secretary of the Navy.

 • Semper Fidelis Award (Semper Fi). For professional achievement and contribution to Semper Fi and NROTC.

 • Society of American Military Engineers. Given to a Naval ROTC student who demonstrates an understanding of the importance of technical leadership.

 • Sons of the American Revolution Award. For superior military appearance, bearing and leadership.

 • The Retired Officers Association Award (TROA). Given to a Naval ROTC student who shows a high order of loyalty to the unit, school and country.

 • Veterans of Foreign Wars Award. Given to two Naval ROTC students who have made a significant contribution to the battalion.

 • USAA Spirit Award. Given to a Naval ROTC student who exemplifies the concept of service to the unit, community and nation. The recipient receives a clock and admission to the United Services Automobile Association.
