LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway will play a key role in the ongoing process to select a new NCAA president thanks to his appointment this week as chair of the association's Division 1 governing board.
Hemenway was named chair of the 18-member Division 1 Board of Directors, succeeding outgoing Ohio State University President William "Brit" Kirwan. The appointment is effective immediately.
As board chair, Hemenway becomes one of five members of the presidential selection committee, which will interview candidates and recommend a candidate to the NCAA's 16-member executive committee, which will name a new president. Hemenway also is a member of the executive committee.
The NCAA -- an association of approximately 1,200 institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals that oversees administration of intercollegiate athletics -- is seeking a replacement for Cedric Dempsey, who is retiring Jan. 1, 2003. A search firm is slated to present a list of 10 to 15 names of finalists to the search committee in August. A new president is to be appointed by Nov. 1.
Hemenway, who became KU chancellor in 1995, was appointed to the Division 1 board in 2001 as the Big 12 Conference representative. He will serve on the board and as chair through the January 2005 NCAA convention in Anaheim, Calif.
The board's duties include approving Division 1 legislative proposals and appointing special task forces or study groups to closely examine issues.
