MEDIA ADVISORY re: KU student murdered in Golfito, Costa Rica

 • KU official flies to Costa Rica: The University of Kansas today sent Susan Gronbeck-Tedesco, interim director of Study Abroad at KU, to Costa Rica today to escort the body of Shannon Martin home to her family in Kansas. Gronbeck-Tedesco will be accompanied by David Schmitz of Lawrence, Shannon Martin's boyfriend.

 • Memorial at KU: A remembrance gathering and potluck dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Friday for friends and family at the Ecumenical Christian Ministries building, 1204 Oread Ave., Lawrence (just north of the University of Kansas campus).

 • Funeral: Funeral services have been slated for 10 a.m., Saturday at Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Rd., Topeka. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Penwell-Gabel Midtown Funeral Home in Topeka is in charge of arrangements.

 • Scholarship Fund: Memorial donations may be sent in care of the Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Rd., Topeka KS 66611. Donations will go to the Shannon Lucile Martin Scholarship Fund for undergraduate research in biology at the University of Kansas. The fund will be administered by the Kansas University Endowment Association.
