E. Funding of Classroom Improvements

Define process to be improved:
  • The allocation and prioritization of funds for the physical improvement of classrooms.
  • What are the perceived problems?
  • At present, a relatively small amount of money is allocated each year for physical improvement of classrooms. The amount has been $100,000 a year in recent years, but is proposed to increase to $200,000 a year in FY 1997. The monies used for classroom improvements have come from the Repair and Rehabilitation Funds (Building Funds). In addition to the stated funding, there is a possibility that a large amount of money ($4.9 million) will be available beginning in FY 1997 under the Regents proposed Crumbling Classroom Fund. The process by which decisions are made about the use of this money is not well established and vague at best. The Teaching Commons Committee, the Space Committee, Academic Affairs (Provost), and Design and Construction Management have all played a role in the process. Responsibilities of each group have not been clearly defined. No clear procedure has been established either for soliciting information about needed improvements or prioritizing work on identified improvements that are needed.

  • Teaching Commons Committee has unanimously recommended this process be addressed.

  • Short-term task
  • What is the desired outcome of the improvement of this process?
  • The desired outcome is the establishment of a well-defined process to identify funds for classroom improvements, to identify needed classroom improvements, and to prioritize the projects. The process should consider the needs of faculty and students.
  • Are administrative savings likely to result? How?
  • Administrative savings are not likely to result; however, better use of funds should result.
