Report of the Chancellor's Campus-Wide Task Force on Administration and Reengineering

PART II: Reengineering

I. Introduction

This is the second and final of two reports by the Chancellor's Campus-Wide Task Force on Administration and Reengineering. Appointed in August, 1995, the Task Force was charged to address three issues:
1) Identify opportunities for streamlining administration and restructuring it;
2) Identify opportunities for administrative savings; and
3) Identify opportunities for reengineering any and all administrative processes for the University of Kansas.

The Chancellor's definition of reengineering for our purposes is making processes less costly, more efficient, and more student-oriented.

The first report, delivered December 18, 1995, addressed issues of administrative restructuring. It focused on making the academic missions of teaching and research the central core of the organization of the University of Kansas. The second report, which is due by June 1, 1996, continues to emphasize the centrality of teaching and research by recommending a selected group of processes that might be reengineered and administrative cost savings which members of the university community have suggested. As in our previous report, our expectation is that these recommendations will be modified by the Chancellor as appropriate, in order that they may be addressed effectively by implementation teams made up of knowledgeable people in a particular area.
